In fact all the characters were well written, although Claudia’s voice came off as a little young. Monday was Claudia’s only friend, she helped Claudia complete her homework when her dyslexia made it hard for her to read the questions, and was a good sister. Monday wasn’t romanticized for us to care about her, she was portrayed as a complex person with flaws. The friendship between Monday and Claudia before Monday disappeared was well done. “Well, sometimes the people we love the most can hurt us the most.” Which is a shame, because the book had really solid writing and a naturally interesting plot. Even typing that all out was super confusing, so you can see why it made for a somewhat confusing reading experience. The book alternates between before (right after Monday had disappeared), after (when Claudia knows what happened to Monday), 2 years before the before and 1 year before the before. The worst thing about this book is the timeline. In Monday’s Not Coming, lots of people with authority ignore Claudia’s concerns including the police. An interview Jackson did about this is here. The movement centred around the lack of media attention when black girls are missing. When the book came out, #missinggirlsDC was trending on twitter. Jackson wrote this book out of two news articles she read which involved missing children who were not deemed missing until their bodies were found. The actual content of the book was quite dark but never for shock value. Either way, it was still interesting to read. The actual mystery as to what happened to Monday was in my opinion quite obvious but that could be because I watched quite a lot of true crime shows back in the day. The pacing of this book was great to maintain the suspense of the mystery. And how nobody cared until they found her. How nobody noticed she was gone except me. “This is the story of how my best friend disappeared. And when Monday is taken out from school and seems to disappear, it is up to Claudia to determine where Monday is and why she disappeared.
